I had an awesome day today at barcamp, which was a user-run “un” conference in Auckland today. Basically people said they’d provide talks or discussions, and other people came along and listened and participated with them.

I took on talking at Barcamp about some recent ideas in psychology, especially the psychology of happiness, and combining them with an idea about being in action; the challenge of 100 hours from Matt Webb.

So the video I have put above is a quick 5 minute talk I did in the “rapid fire” or “lightning talks” session in the middle of the day – where we also heard about HTML 5, CSS, why New Zealand is awesome, geo-caching and a few more that slip my mind (not that they weren’t also awesome), that really just introduces the challenge and call to action. And I’ve just noticed the camera work by mikenz cuts out my initial hi and starts at “umm, I spell it out” .. oh well. Also, the laugh track is Mike.

And when I say $50 to set up my blog, some people go, oh, you spent too much! That’s $35 for the domain, and then with exchange rate abit to WordPress.com to get them to do the domain hosting, which probably works out to that. I choose this solution because a) It lets me start the writing side of blogging straight away, and b) If I want finer control down the line, I can export everything and run WordPress on my own server.

I also did a 20 minute talk that I got a recording of – shoddy camera work by Robbie aside (jokes Robbie, love you for doing it!), which I’ve linked to above – it’s on it’s own page with the transcript – well, the notes I was reading off. I don’t feel like I need to gum up my blogroll with 20 minutes of me yapping, if you want to hear it you can click through. :P

Anyway, it was awesome to meet all sorts of cool people from around here at barcamp, and I definitely will be going back, and to similiar events over the years to come.
